Top 10 future trends for mobile phones

The mobile industry moves at such a fast space, it's often hard to keep up. But what are the big predicted future trends coming to a smartphone near us? We roundup 10 of the best.

With every major mobile phone release, users are treated to an ever-expanding list of advanced features. Some are more useful than others, but they represent an industry that is always on the move.

The next big feature to make our lives easier is usually only an upgrade away but we've decided to gaze a little further into the future as we anticipate where manufacturers will go next with their products. Here is our top 10 future smartphone features

1) Projection
We don't have to look too far into the future for this one, with Samsung's Beam handset already offering projection, albeit in a fairly primitive form and more advanced Android based handsets on the horizon. Basic or not though, the Beam is a ground breaking device, and in projection we see a feature which we think will become a staple in future releases.

Being able to sit down in a conference room and simply view a presentation or video without waiting for laptops to be plugged in or faulty cables to be swapped out would be breath of fresh air for most business users. As technology advances we will see the extension of projection into the video conferencing environment and others.

Looking further into the future we should see mobile devices packing holographic projection. The technology, which is in its infancy currently, offers a full three-dimensional rendering of the subject and would be invaluable to any designer or architect. People in the medical profession may have to wait a while longer for full body holographics but it's certainly not a flight of fancy to assume it will arrive.

2) Advanced imaging
Every new camera phone released is touted as a 'compact camera replacement' but with the advancement made in the camera industry they seldom live up to their hype. We're set to get a glimpse of what's in store though with the upcoming release of Nokia's N8 smartphone, which carries an eight megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics.

We've also seen huge advances in video recording, with Samsung's Galaxy S and Apple's much vaunted iPhone 4 offering 720P capture, with HTC's Desire HD also entering the fray with 720P HD video capability.

As good as these features are, they aren't good enough to usurp a compact DV or still camera and the future may well see a further coming together of big names in the photography and mobile world as industry leaders in both fields realise that people don't want to carry a camera and a mobile device. So expect to see 12 megapixels and 1080P capture, huge on-board storage and even full editing on the hoof with Photoshop and Premier among the software being used.

3)  Augmented reality
Augmented reality is the future. As end-users we've had our initiation with Google's 'Goggles', 'Layar', 'Wikitude' and 'Last Minute’s Nru', among others, but the flow of AR technology into the marketplace is only just beginning.

We can look forward to true location awareness, enabling clients to view couriers progress in real-time, AR for emergency services, showing the location of victims of crime or accident by their cellular signal and many other greatly useful applications to make our professional lives more efficient and safer.

Aside from general advancement in AR apps, we can also expect a range of devices offering AR replacements for traditional methods of human input, ranging from projected keyboards and touchpads to eye-dialling your phone via a heads-up display while driving. AR is also likely to fill the void between 2D projection and holographic, allowing users to conference and work in a CG environment, sharing information and tools and interacting via virtual controls and workspaces.

The application of AR technology will go beyond smartphones though. Indeed, expect to see augmented advertising hoardings and other interactive media as the norm in the coming years.

4) Desktop replacement
As processor manufacturers continue developing smaller, less power hungry and increasingly powerful products the traditional desktop computer edges nearer and nearer the door. With tablets like Dell's Streak and Nokia's N900 we've been given almost complete desktop functionality in the palm of our hand.

The successors to those devices will be empowered by multi-core processors, advanced graphic processing units and more RAM and ROM than you can shake a stick at. Enabling users to carry out every task they could want on their handheld, and de-centralising the workplace in ways not seen since the introduction of the World Wide Web. Expect to see super-mobile, super-powerful devices that you can plug into your display when you're in the office and work on when you're on the move.

In the more immediate future we can expect to see Nokia's follow up to the geek-friendly N900, sporting ARM's latest Cortex-A9 processor and a lush capacitive touch screen, and no doubt the next generation of Apple's iPad, which also runs on hardware provided by the British chip manufacturer. The iPad may have divided the community like the business equivalent of marmite, but it certainly heralded a new approach to super-mobile computing which we feel will be the standard in years to come.

5) Mobile cloud
Along with the power and flexibility of tomorrow's devices we should see a leap to cloud computing in the mobile market.

With smaller, more powerful devices having the lion's share of their hard work done remotely, users could expect to have all the power that they need without having the suit ripping form factor to go with it. Also, the de-centralised storage of documents, photographs and other data would enable users to work seamlessly with colleagues and even share devices without loss of data.

The removal of brand-based constraints from applications would also be a firm benefit with mobile cloud implementation, any device, any app; so long as it's registered on the network. We believe the mobile cloud would also see the distillation of mobile operating systems, leaving users with a quicker, more labour efficient experience when working on their devices.

The mobile cloud is already in use in certain applications such as Google's Gmail and Apple's MobileMe, but with more extensive usage network infrastructure would have to be fast and stable enough to support the high amount of data transfer needed to make such a concept viable which leads us on to our next point.

6)  4G and beyond
The arrival of 4G is imminent and with it comes a new array of functionality and speed to enhance our mobile lives. Higher specced hardware and improved network infrastructure will provide businesses with a fast and stable data connection, and the next generation of applications, some of which we have already touched on, will run smoothly and - hopefully - without a hiccup.

Keeping you connected is only part of it, the higher speeds afforded users by 4G technology will allow the delivery of high-quality media to clients, enabling you to get your marketing materials out into the world that much faster.

With a new mobile generation coming around roughly every 10 years, we can expect to see 5G implemented fully by 2020, and following current projections will likely see peak data speeds of 1Gbps.

7) Biometrics
As mobile devices evolve into more than just communications tools, security becomes ever more important. Priceless data has famously been left on trains and in cars and the potential loss of revenue from such an oversight could be huge, not to mention the embarrassment to your company.
Enter biometric security.

Fujitsu has already begun rolling out fingerprint based biometric security across some of its range and in the near future voice or even inner-ear activated devices will be widely available, allowing corporations to protect their data fully when it's not in use.

Other uses could include individual workspaces within a single device, enabling a user to pick the device up and have his or her data downloaded automatically, once their identity has been confirmed – a function which could prove invaluable with shared hardware.

As our mobiles become less exception and more norm the concept of all forms of necessary data being held within our device is gathering momentum. Our credit cards, passports, insurance documents etc. could all be carried around with us in our hip pocket, securely protected and unable to be used without our presence.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini Arrives in New Colors

Shortly after they leaked, Samsung posted the new rumored colors for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini meaning the device now has a grand total of six different colors available for those interested in something other than the standard pebble blue or white.
Yesterday, it became clear that Samsung would be releasing new colors for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, its smaller version of the Galaxy S3 available in regions other than the United States, though it was unclear just how soon the manufacturer would deliver these new colored models. It appears much sooner than Mobile World Congress 2013 as the new colors have appeared on Samsung France today.
The new colors were spotted by SamMobile on Samsung’s French website and they show the Galaxy S3 in four previous unannounced colors including Titan Gray, Amber Brown, Garnet Red and Onyx Black. These new colors bring the number of color options up to a grand total of six for the Galaxy S3 Mini, and it puts it on par with the original Galaxy S3 that is also available in an assortment of color options around the globe.
Additionally, Samsung is likely going to be announcing new colors for the Galaxy Note 2, though now, it could be that it introduces them before Mobile World Congress 2013 which was thought to be the event that would launch the new colors for the Galaxy S3 Mini. So those looking for a Galaxy Note 2 in several new colors options should be hopeful that something materializes in the next few days rather than in the next few weeks.
The Galaxy S3 Mini is exactly what it sounds like, a miniature version of the Galaxy S3. It features a 4″ Super AMOLED display with 480 x 800 resolution, a 5 megapixel camera, a speedy dual-core processor, as well as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.
It is not unavailable on a carrier in the United States and with the Galaxy S4 likely on the way in the first half of 2013, it’s unlikely that the device will ever hit an official carrier in the U.S.

Samsung Galaxy S4 release date ?

Our Samsung Galaxy S4 release date, specs & price rumours article will grow to accommodate even more speculation as the months roll on. So save this page and keep checking back for regular updates
Samsung’s Galaxy S3 launched to much critical acclaim when it was unveiled in May last year, we awarded it our Best Buy award and it still remains our top pick Android handset. No wonder, then, that speculation surrounding the launch of its follow-up is mounting.
While Samsung is keeping tight-lipped on its future product launches, a series of 'leaks' and 'source quotes' claim the South Korean firm is putting the final touches to its fourth-generation flagship handset - almost certainly to be called the Samsung Galaxy S4. Here, we round up all the latest speculation to find out what to expect.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 RELEASE DATE

Samsung has released a teaser video hinting at the company's plans for the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 in January, promising 'something new' for fans of its products.
Sadly, the company's short video - available on YouTube - is somewhat short on details and heavy on marketing, but it seems likely that the company is planning to use the event to unveil a next-generation Android device - most probably the Galaxy S4.
Although the S3 was released just over half a year ago, it faces some stiff competition in the market from the likes of the Google Nexus 4.
Sharing much of the specification of the Galaxy S3, the Nexus 4 is significantly cheaper - at least, if you can wait the five to six weeks required by Google's back-ordering process due to unexpected demand - and comes with the latest Android 4.2 'Jelly Bean' software with numerous improvements and bug fixes, including a clever 360-degree panoramic photo mode.
As a result, it seems likely that Samsung has seen sales of its Galaxy S3 handset grind to a halt - something it will be keen to address soon. It's possible that an announcement will come at CES next week, but given the lagging nature of the US mobile market, it's far more likely that Samsung will hold off at least until MWC in late February at least, and our money would be on a standalone launch event nearer to the middle of the year.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 PRICE

As expected, leaks surrounding the S4's suspected price tag have been thin on the ground, although we can expect it to cost as much as the S3 when it launched back in May - a wallet-busting £499. Once again though the tough competition from Google's own Nexus 4 device may force Samsung to lower its price in order to compete - unless of course the hardware specification is a big step forward.
On contract you're likely to be looking at £30-40 a month minimum, and considerably more with a 4G service such as EE. This will be an expensive handset, though probably still a little less than the iPhone 5 costs.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 SPECS

According to sources speaking to Taiwanese industry rumour site DigiTimes, the S4 will include a 5in Full HD display with an impressive 1920x1080 resolution, following a trend starting with rival HTC's Butterfly handset. Such a display would boast an impressive pixel density of around 440 pixels per inch (PPI) - significantly above the resolution of Apple's Retina display technology. Such a big display, however, would certainly blur the line between the S4 and Samsung's own tablet-phone hybrid Galaxy Note 2 device.
Another seperate rumour supports this ever-increasing screen size mania, including a report from The Korea Times suggesting that a new entry in the Galaxy Note family, imaginatively dubbed the Galaxy Note 3, will include an impressively large 6.3in Full HD display - which would maintain the gap between the devices.
Another rumour has pointed to the use of a flexible display technology, previously demonstrated as a stand-alone product by Samsung, to give the Galaxy S4 an unbreakable screen. Sadly, this may not come to pass - at least, not until the Galaxy S5 is ready - with The Verge quoting an anonymous source as stating that commercial implementation of Samsung's flexible display technology in smartphone devices is "still a while off."

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Apple iPhone 4S the War Remain Continue

A drastic war amongst the Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone and Apple’s iPhone 4S is well known in the industry and both have supportive majorities on their sides.
In the beginning the war was amidst the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple iPhone 4 and at the end the Galaxy S2 won. And this the reason that this year earlier, Samsung had given the title of world’s biggest mobile vendor with the consideration of sales numbers in the year starting.
and became the leader of mobile phone industry globally; in this regards Samsung Galaxy S2 played an promising role and let the Samsung achieve such success worldwide.
Apple ironically copes with the severe fall in purchase of its devices. It looks like Apple’s customers also have scooped up by the Samsung.
Meant to say whoever won’t seek an awesome phone? And this is the reason that people were waiting for the new launch of Samsung from the day Apple released the iPhone 4S and they all had immense expectation for the phone.
Regarding the specifications of the phone rumors began to spread rapidly, though all were not true and number of who confided in the rumors are bitterly disappointed while they heard the official specs run-down regarding the Samsung Galaxy S3; it had nothing new as compared to its predecessor. The far most changes were the new processor, RAM and screen size but everything else was unheeded.
So, the question is, now Galaxy S3 4.8 inch will be mop up by the 3.5 inch Apple 4S? And the answer is-Nope, and number of individuals still fix on the Galaxy phone over the iPhone. Perhaps, Apple won’t also have slipped down this industry if it stagnated being so grasping regarding everything.
What’s your opinion?
We all know about the raging war between Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone and Apple’s iPhone 4S. Both sides have a lot of people on their sides.
Earlier, the war was between Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S2 had emerged winner then. Earlier this year, Samsung was given the title of being the world’s biggest mobile vendor considering the sales numbers in the first quarter.
But, the best achievement of Samsung was that it beat Nokia and became the global leader of mobile phones. Samsung Galaxy S2 played a huge part in that achievement.
Apple on the other hand has been facing serious decrease in purchase of their devices. It seems like Samsung has scooped up all of their customers as well.
I mean who wouldn’t fall for such an awesome phone? And so, everyone was waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S3 ever since Apple released the iPhone 4S and everyone had big hopes for the phone.
It wasn’t long before rumors began to spread like wildfire about the specifications of the phone, many of them were not true. Most who believed the rumors have been terribly disappointed when they heard the official specs detailing of the Samsung Galaxy S3.
There weren’t any significant changes from its predecessor. The big changes were the new processor, RAM and screen size. Everything else was ignored.
So did the 3.5 inch Apple 4S pip the 4.8 inch Samsung Galaxy S3? Nope. People still choose the Galaxy phone over the iPhone. Maybe if Apple stopped being so greedy about everything, they wouldn’t have gone down this road.
What do you think?

Samsung to add iPhone 5 to US lawsuits vs Apple

Samsung Electronics Co said on Thursday it planned to add Apple's iPhone 5 to its existing patent lawsuits against the US rival, a move that could lead to a preliminary sales injunction of the popular smartphone.

The fresh legal step by the South Korean firm comes as Apple booked orders for over two million iPhone 5 models in the first 24 hours and the model hits store shelves on Friday.

Samsung and Apple are locked in global patent battle in 10 countries and the stakes are high as the two technology giants vie for the top spot in the booming smartphone market.

Both companies are also aggressively raising marketing spending to promote their latest products ahead of the crucial year-end holiday season.

"Samsung anticipates that it will file, in the near future, a motion to amend its infringement contentions to add the iPhone 5 as an accused product," it said in a US court filing.

"Based on information currently available, Samsung expects that the iPhone 5 will infringe the asserted Samsung patents-in-suit in the same way as the other accused iPhone models."

Samsung said in a separate statement on Thursday: "Apple continues to take aggressive legal measures that will limit market competition. Under these circumstances, we have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights."

Apple Korea declined to comment.

Apple scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung in late August after a US jury found the Korean firm had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded the US firm $1.05 billion in damages.

The jury also found that Apple did not infringe any of Samsung's asserted patents. Samsung has since vowed it would continue to fight.

Know why Samsung is waiting for iPhone 5 launch

It is not just the Apple fanboys who are eagerly awaiting the iPhone 5 to launch. Apple's arch rival Samsung too is waiting to get its hands on the iPhone 5. However, rather than comparing its capabilities with its flagship Galaxy S III, the South Korean manufacturer is waiting to see how many of its patents does the new iPhone violate.

According to Foss Patents, a blog that covers news about wireless patents and mobile devices, Samsung has filed a case management statement with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California against Apple. In the filing, the company said that it is certain Apple iPhone 5 will infringe upon eight of its patents, just like the previous iPhones.

The filing, as per Foss Patents, says, "Samsung anticipates that it will file, in the near future, a motion to amend its infringement contentions to add the iPhone 5 as an accused product. Based on information currently available, Samsung expects that the iPhone 5 will infringe the asserted Samsung patents-in-suit in the same way as the other accused iPhone models. Samsung plans to file a motion to amend its infringement contentions to address the iPhone 5 as soon as it has had a reasonable opportunity to analyze the device. Because Samsung believes the accused functionality of the iPhone 5 will be similar to the accused functionality of other accused Apple products, Samsung does not believe that amendment of its infringement contentions should affect the case schedule."

On Thursday, Samsung said in a separate statement: "Apple continues to take aggressive legal measures that will limit market competition. Under these circumstances, we have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights."
Apple Korea reiterated its position that it was the victim of copying, not vice versa. "At Apple, we value originality and innovation... We make these products to delight our customers, not for our competitors to flagrantly copy."

This move is part of a larger patent war between Apple and Samsung, where both litigants stress that the other violates its patents. The biggest development in the battle was last month, when Apple won a lawsuit in the US, its home ground, and Samsung was ordered to pay it over $1 billion in damages. The jury also found that Apple did not infringe any of Samsung's asserted patents.

The iPhone maker then gave a list of 21 Samsung smartphones that it wants banned in the US, including the current flagship Galaxy S III, as well as Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Ace.

Samsung has appealed against the verdict to the court.

Samsung, the biggest Android phone maker, received a second US legal setback last week when a judge at the International Trade Commission said in a preliminary ruling that Apple did not violate patents owned by Samsung.

Apple's victory was also a blow to Google, whose Android software powers the Samsung products that were found to infringe Apple patents.
